10Thedesignofthecurriculumwhilstconformingtostatutoryrequirementsiscentredonthedevelopmentofthewholepersonasamemberofthehumancommunity.Thecurriculumdrivesaspirationsittakesstudentstoplacestheydidnotknowtheycouldreachanditiscentraltoourdesiretoenableourstudentstomeetwithconfidencethechallengesofachangingworld.FOUNDATIONMaryWardx1fsschoolsprovidedaneducationappropriatetothedifferingneedsofherpupils.Inthex1edayschoolsx1fthepupilsweretaughtnotonlyreligionandreadingandwritingandLatiniftheyhadtheaptitudebutalsosometradebywhichtoearnalivinginthefuture.InsomepartsofEuropetheseschoolsweresosuccessfulinteachingproficiencyinknittingembroideryandsewingthattherewerecomplaintsthattheyweredeprivingthebrothelsoftheirlabourforceThistrulyisanexampleofeducationthattransformslives.Thecurriculuminherschoolshadmanyinnovativefeatures.Itincludedforexampleexercisesinrhetoricandprovidedopportunitiesforactinginandproducingplays.Thiswassothatthestudentsmightlearntospeakwithconfidenceandauthority.Inanagewhenwomenx1fsvoiceswererarelyheardinpublicplacesandevenmorerarelylistenedtotheseweredaringinnovationswhichcausedoutrageinsomequarters.CHARACTERISTICSThecurriculumisdynamicandflexibleandthusresponsivetothechangingneedsoftheindividualandofsociety.Itisbasedonarealisticgraspoftheneedsofstudentswholiveinthe21stcentury.Programmesandcoursesareinclusiveandrespondtotheneedsofyoungpeopleacrossthewidestpossibleabilityrangethatlocalcircumstancesallow.Schemesofworkareaspirationaltheyaredesignedwiththehighestexpectationsofpersonalandacademicachievementinmind.Thecurriculumtakesaccountofthewholeperson.Itsaimisthefullestpossibledevelopmentofeverydimensionoftheperson.Particularattentionispaidtotheethicaldimensionofthecurriculum.Wherepossibleteacherschoosecurriculumthemesthatengagestudentsinintellectualanalysisofforexamplejusticeandpeaceissuesandenvironmentalchallengeswhichthreatenthesurvivaloftheplanet.Timeissetasideforstudentstoengageinpracticalactionandbeagentsofsocialchangeintheirlocalcommunitiesandbeyond.THECURRICULUM
